Our Next Steps: What We Plan to Do
At this time, we cannot take any major steps further in our project to helping the food insecure. However, we decided to help by donating the food from our food drive (30 cans), even though we know that it could potentially be harmful. However, we decided that the cans should not go to waste, and that our food would be donated to the food bank as soon as possible. We also decided that the money raised from our GoFundMe ($1,100) should be donated as soon as possible. We then made sure to confirm the fact that they got the money from our drive, and they said that it would help them very much. The last thing that we can do for our project is to raise awareness about the growing rates of food insecurity in Los Angeles. Many people are losing their sources of income, and they are forced to go into food insecurity and are on the edge of poverty. In fact, the unemployment rate for California skyrocketed up from 3.9% to 6.3% in a matter of weeks (source: Los Angeles Times). We want to raise awareness in hopes of more people helping to stop this problem. In this time of need, we think that by donating and raising awareness, we are helping all that we can. Please join the fight to stop the spread and keep people from being hungry by donating to https://www.lafoodbank.org .
Food Insecurity During a Pandemic: What We All Can do to Help
During this horrible virus taking the world by storm, we are forced to retreat indoors, and isolate ourselves from others. This is difficult when you run a food bank or a food pantry. Food pantries and food banks have processes by which most of the things are done by hand (handing food to one another, accepting donations). In this time, the food banks are open and in need of help more than ever due to many people being laid off and many people using the money from stimulus checks to pay what they can of rent. They are struggling to feed their families and this causes them to need the food banks and food pantries even more. However, food pantries like Saint Augustine S.A.V.E.S. cannot get as much food as they usually do, because they get food from grocery stores, and grocery stores are practically empty. This results in more hungry people in Los Angeles.
While the future looks for unfortunate many, we can still help. Physical food donations are not the best idea, so the best alternative is donating money using the Los Angeles Regional Food Bank so that the food bank can afford to buy food for the hungry. And since one dollar can be used to buy four meals, this helps more than risking the lives of many by donating food that could harm someone who is at a high risk of COVID-19. Many people who have a high risk of COVID-19 are low income workers, who do not have reliable access to free healthcare, and they are also the people who are food insecure at this time, because of the instability of the low income job that they may be working at. In addition, you could also help by donating masks and gloves and other supplies like hand sanitizer to the bank for its workers and for the people that they help. You can also go to your local food pantry and donate money, masks, and gloves to try to prevent the spread of COVID-19. By donating, you can save lives through the comfort of your own home.
